YELLOW ROOT
(xanthorhiza simplissima)

History and past roots

Use of the yellow root plant (xanthorhiza simplicissima) dates back to Native American tribes, specifically the Cherokee and Catawba. The Cherokee called it “dalni amayultehi”, meaning “water edge growing”. They would use the plant as a topical remedy to relieve sore eyes & would also chew on the root for relief of sore throat & mouth.

In addition to its many medicinal properties, they used the root as a source of natural yellow dye for various items such as: ceremonial feathers, baskets & hunting bows. The Catawba used yellow root in a decoction for stomach ulcers, cold symptoms. European settlers caught onto the positive benefits of using the yellow root plant for various ailments & continued to use it in similar ways to the Native Americans who taught them. The plant is native to the eastern United States and is typically found along banks of streams & rivers in the Applachia.
